Staycations

Right across mainland Europe ‘staycationing’ looks to be the most popular holiday choice this summer, accordingly to booking figures from popular car rental site, carhiremarket.com.

The Spanish and Italians are the most likely to be staying in their home countries, with coastal resorts such as Mahon and Palermo proving popular. While the promise of warm weather is too much for some Brits to resist, many are remaining loyal to home soil and booking a break in the capital, with London ranking as their most booked destination for summer 2013.

For those holidaymakers who are venturing abroad, Spain once again ranks as the top destination for Europeans, with resorts including Ibiza and Palma de Majorca showing the highest appeal. Germans are the most adventurous European nation and the least likely to stay at home, heading on long-haul holidays to destinations like Miami.

Countries that have struggled economically this year, such as Greece and Cyprus, are still attracting a high level of bookings, as visitors flock to take advantage of cheap package deals at high-end hotels.

Andrew Shorrock, Product Manager at Carhiremarket.com, said: “Most European holidaymakers appear to be appreciating the ease and simplicity of hiring a car to make the most of what their own countries can offer. With such a wide variety of beautiful locations within Europe, we’re finally welcoming the attractiveness of the places that are on our doorstep by favouring these over the more adventurous long-haul breaks.”
