Tiling is the answer to all sorts of decorating questions. The experts from Crown Tiles explain why tiles are so versatile
- What are the pros and cons of different tile materials?
There are various types of materials that can be used to construct tiles, with the main three being Ceramic, Porcelain and natural stone. They all come with their unique benefits and drawbacks. Ceramic for example tends to be the least expensive and can be used for walls and floors; porcelain however, while usually more expensive is typically much more hardwearing and can even be used outdoors! Natural stone tiles offer unique looks and feels, designs that will never be seen in other materials; this uniqueness comes with a higher price tag and significantly more maintenance.
- Which parts of the house most suit mosaic tiling?
Mosaics can be quite unusual when it comes to talking about tiles. This is because a lot of the general rules don’t apply to them and you’re more likely to find materials that wouldn’t necessarily be sign in most tiles, such as glass. In theory mosaics can be used in any room but we would recommend they are used sparingly as they can quite easily become over powering, especially in smaller spaces. With this in mind we would recommend they are used for features, borders or splash-backs in kitchens and bathrooms.
- Is tiling a durable material?
Tiles, and we’re talking predominantly with floor tiles in this case as they see the most traffic, are extremely durable when laid correctly. A sturdy tiled floor that has been laid correctly will serve you well for many more years than an equivalent wooden or carpeted floor. Not only will a tiled floor last longer but it will be significantly easier to clean and maintain.
- Is tiling compatible with underfloor heating?
If you’re thinking of tiling outdoors there are a few things to consider; what are you going to be tiling onto and where are you tiling? These things will determine the kind of tiles that are available to use; for example some tiles can only be used outdoors if they are being laid on concrete. In general however, tiles that are certified for use outdoors will be significantly more durable than their equivalent in other materials such as paving slabs; most outdoor tiles are comp[lately weatherproof and erosion resistant.
- Can you use tiles with underfloor heating?
The simple answer is yes. The not so simple answer is yes… but… Many underfloor heating systems can be used to great affect with tiles; however not all underfloor heating systems are suitable for use with tiles and not all tiles will be suitable for use with underfloor heating. It is important to make sure the tile you are choosing will be safe to use with the heating system you’re using; if you’re unsure feel free to give us at Crown Tiles a call and we’ll be happy to help.
- How easy is it to do my own tiling? What are the main techniques to learn?
Tiling a wall or floor can be a daunting task, especially if it’s your first time attempting it. That being said there’s nothing to say it has to be. Take a look at our tiling “how to’s” and guides in the blog section of the Crown tiles website for some hints and tips! With that being said if you can get yourself a professional tiler, we would always recommend taking this option for the best results.
The single most important pointer if you’re going to be tiling yourself is….. FOLLOW. THE. INSTRUCTIONS. We can’t stress this enough; the majority of people attempting a tiling project for the first time neglect this advice when it comes to mixing grouts and more importantly adhesives. If mixed improperly your grout won’t dry or will crack. Mixing adhesives incorrectly can be significantly worse as your tiles simply won’t stick, which will not only leave you starting from scratch but can be quite dangerous too!
