Newspaper headlines have described the King’s ‘relief’ as it is announced that Prince Harry will fly home for the coronation on May 6th – but, controversially, he will not be accompanied by his wife Meghan or by the children.
“Harry home alone” is the headline of the Metro, showing images of the King and Duke and Duchess of Sussex with the news that Prince Harry will travel back to the UK alone for his father’s coronation while his wife stays in the US with their children Archie and Lilibet. Prince Harry’s coronation trip is described as “blink and you miss it” by the Daily Mail, with columnist Sarah Vine claiming that Meghan’s absence will be a “relief” to Buckingham Palace. The paper, whose publisher is being sued by the Prince over allegations of phone-tapping, says that the announcement came after “delicate negotiations” between the Sussexes and the Palace.
Spare
The Daily Mirror has the headline “Spare Will be There” to describe Prince Harry’s coronation plans, in a reference to his recent memoir, titled Spare, which saw him make a raft of allegations about his family, including of a fight between him and brother Prince William over remarks the latter supposedly made about Meghan.
The Daily Telegraph claims that Prince Harry’s decision to attend the coronation has pleased the King, raising hopes of some form of reconciliation, and claims that Meghan’s decision to stay in California is to celebrate the couple’s son Prince Archie’s fourth birthday, which is the same day as the coronation.
Th Daily Express describes the King as “forgiving” and the prince “disgruntled”, with claims that there will inevitably be a lot of scrutiny on the strained links between the royals after the duke’s controversial memoir, published earlier this year. The coronation visit will mark the first time Prince Harry has been seen with his family since the release of the book.
