Mental Health: Let’s Talk Openly on Time To Talk Day

Today marks Time to Talk day, where the nation is encouraged to open up about their struggles with mental health

Time to Talk day was created by the growing social movement, Time to Change, who are working on changing the way we think about mental health problems.

While mental health awareness is better than ever before, research published by the World Health Organisation shows that how people cope with mental health problems is getting worse. The number of people who self-harm or have suicidal thoughts is also increasing.

According to WHO, 1 in 4 people in the UK suffer with some form of mental illness, making these issues more common than we originally thought. Research also suggests that 3 in 10 people in the UK feel they cannot discuss their mental health concerns with friends or family for fear of judgement.

In the UK, 3.3 people suffer from depression and 5.9 people suffer with generalised anxiety disorders.

This shows how big an issue mental health problems are in the UK.

It is evident from these statistics that many people still need significantly more help within their community to deal with mental illness.
