7. Any professional would tell you that the most important part of a painting job the preparation. You will never get a good finish if the surface you are working on is not clean, dry, smooth and level.

Depending on the quality of the surface you may spend a lot longer on the preparation than on the painting. Old wallpaper must be removed thoroughly, damp and mould treated and sealed, and cracks filled and levelled.

8. If your surface is painted with an oil-based paint, water-based paint may not take over it. Washing the surface first then roughen it with a medium grit sandpaper to make sure it’s a good surface for the water-based paint to stick to.

Finally, of course, there’s your choice of tools. Economising on your DIY decorating with cheap brushes that shed bristles, or worn, dried out paint rollers, will never give you satisfactory results.
