2. SUICIDE SQUAD (2016)
A talented cast including Margot Robbie, Will Smith and Jared Leto couldn’t save this spectacular mess, in which a squad of largely unlikeable characters are put together to solve a problem which, it turns out, they were responsible for in the first place. A muddled plot, thinly written characters, and choppy directing add up to an unwatchable disaster…. which leads us to…
1. BIRDS OF PREY (AND THE FANTABULOUS EMANCIPATION OF ONE HARLEY QUINN) (2020)
You have to feel sorry for the luminous Margot Robbie, who found herself playing the same character in two superhero stinkers, Suicide Squad (2016) and Birds of Prey (2020), and one marginally less awful effort, The Suicide Squad (2021). As Harley Quinn, Margot battles bravely with a muddled script and a lame villain (Ewan McGregor as Black Mask). Nevertheless the movie grossed $201 million worldwide, falling just short of its widely reported break-even point of $250–300 million, and receiving mostly positive reviews from critics, who praised its fast-paced action and Robbie’s performance.
A sequel or spinoff, possibly featuring Batgirl rather than Harley Quinn, is apparently in the works – but will it be bad enough to make it into the Top Ten Worst Superhero Movies of All Time?
