Why is Sleep so Important to our Health?

Sleeping badly can have serious effects on our health. We asked the experts from Sleepeezee for insight and advice

Why is sleep so important to our health and wellbeing?
Getting a good night’s sleep allows us to perform to the best of our ability. Affecting concentration levels and productivity, research has shown that sleep impacts how we get on with our days and tasks. Lack of sleep is therefore known to impair memory, recall and our ability to focus. Over and above keeping our brains on the ball, medical studies suggest there is a link between sleep quality and our physical bodies. Having shorter sleep patterns affect our appetites and many athletes find that optimum performance goes hand in hand with sleep.

What are some of the things that are most likely to disturb our sleep?
Not having a sleep schedule that suits you, as well as the heat and temperature of your room can affect your sleep. The quality of our mattress is also known to disturb sleep. A recent UK Mattress Census commissioned by Travelodge, stated that millions of Britons are sleeping on a mattress that is old and detrimental to their health. Signs such as restless sleep and allergies could indicate it’s time to get a new mattress. Finally, caffeinated drinks can have a real impact on our sleep. Known to keep us awake for longer, caffeine can mess with our cardiac rhythm and wake-sleep cycle, meaning our sleep may be more disturbed and restless.

What can we do to improve our sleeping environment?
There are many small changes we can make to improve our sleep environment and it all begins with the age-old tale of making our bed in the morning. Alongside this, making sure our bedside tables are clutter-free, ensuring our bedding is comfortable, clean, and cosy and removing technology from our bedroom sets us up for optimum sleep.

What is the importance of a proper mattress to sleep?
In the world of mattresses, what might work for someone else may not be right for you. So, it is crucial to choose the correct level of support and comfort for your unique body shape. This will help you to fall asleep faster and will provide the correct spinal alignment. A proper mattress can also help solve sleep issues such as restless sleep, back and neck pain and allergies, allowing you to enjoy the best night’s sleep possible.

What are the different types of mattress construction and filling? How do I choose?
Comfort is subjective, so we always recommend heading into one of our trusted retailers to try our mattresses in person. Natural fillings such as wool are great for those with allergies as wool inhibits the growth of bacteria and dust mites, creating a more hygienic sleep environment. On the other hand, technological fillings such as our Staycool™ Gel and Memory Foam adapt to unique body shapes, providing support and superior pressure relief on the back and hips, particularly for side sleepers.

Can a mattress help control my body temperature?
Yes! The Staycool™ Gel in our mattresses has an open cell structure allowing air to pass through more freely. Our Cool Touch cover from the Cooler range is proven to reduce body temperature to help you get to sleep faster. As well as technological fillings, wool as a filling helps to regulate body temperature, keeping us cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

Can a mattress help with my allergies?
We offer a range of mattresses and bedding to help with allergies. Synthetic or wool fillings are best for those that suffer from allergies, as dust mites cannot survive in these environments. As well as this, our Anti-allergy pillows and duvets are a great way of combating allergies beyond the mattress. Made using Aegis filling that protects against dust mites, these bedding accessories keep common allergies at bay.

What can I do if my partner has different sleeping preferences to me, such as mattress firmness?
Couples with differing sleep preferences are more common than you’d think. The same UK Mattress Census reported that 59% of Britons prefer a medium-firm mattress and 27% opt for a firm mattress. With this debate clearly affecting many couples, we would recommend our Zip and Link mattress. With differing tensions in several of our beds, the Zip and Link allows couples to choose two different comfort feels, so they can sleep well, together.
